With so much that's been in the news lately... would this be a good idea for a reprint collection? How about a SGT. FURY AND HIS HOWLING COMMANDOS Masterwork??? Cover-to-cover work by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby (& Dick Ayers, I think)! The little I've seen & read of the early issues of this were incredibly FUN & EXCITING, along the lines of a movie like KELLY'S HEROES. With all the interest of late in Jack Kirby material, wouldn't this be a sure seller? IP: Logged |

Well, I think so, at least two volumes anyway, which gets us through all the Kirby work, including the Captain America issue, and shows a good bit of the Dick Ayers too. IP: Logged |

Well, I seem to recall that, sadly, sales for DC's "war" Archives weren't that good. Of course, Sgt. Rock and Enemy Ace and Blackhawk were released before the current climates, but still... I'd like a Sgt. Fury Masterworks, but I'd also like to see further volumes for Rock and (specially) for Blackhawk, as the really good stuff is still a few volumes away. IP: Logged |

Really? Well, I guess I'm glad my information was inaccurate. (So where did I get that?). I still stand by what I said, though. I'd rather see more volumes of Blackhawk. How were the sales on that one? IP: Logged |

quote: According to Bob Greenberger sales were good, but not stellar. I would like to see another volume of this also, as well as a volume of Unknown Soldier. However Bob hinted that a second volume of Rock is a very strong possibilty. IP: Logged |

I would like to see another volumes of Sgt.Rock and Enemy Ace. I bought Sgt.Rock just a month ago, so the re-order sales couldn't be so bad. IP: Logged |

Don't take this as gospel: I think Harvey Kurtzman (editor of Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat for those who don't know) said that there are no good war comics, just good anti-war comics. Would the current climate affect sales either way? I don't know, but I just want good comics. Assuming that FF and Thor continue through the end of Kirby and Spider-Man continues, Sgt. Fury is near the top of my list. I'm not sure but I thought Kirby was done in one. I'll buy Sgt. Rock for a long, long time. I didn't buy many war comics as a kid, probably less than 5 if you ignore team-ups in The Brave and the Bold. I'm not sure how much of the original Enemy Ace run is left, but if there's enough, I'd buy it. I'll buy every Blackhawk Archive that is ever produced. They won't produce the superhero era, so I can safely make the previous statement. I'm not sure how good the early Unknown Soldier stories are, but I'm interested. I might be interested in other war comics, especially as trades, but the above are my priorities. As an aside, I'm thinking about picking up the ACG series reprinting Kubert's Tales of the Green Berets. IP: Logged |

Something I forgot: I think Mike Falcon is right about Sgt. Rock sales. However, I think Bob G. made seemingly contradictory statements. As I recall, he originally said that war comics sales were "disappointing." I was thrown for a loop when his later statements seemed to suggest good sales. I can think of two ways to resolve the conflict: IP: Logged |

Pulling numbers out of thin air, let's say Rock had a solid 150 reorders per month, every month, compared to the usual 100 for something like Green Lantern. It takes a little while for that to make itself felt, but in the long run it looks very successful. IP: Logged |

We know that both Rock and Enemy Ace had unusually good advance orders. My guess is that either reorder numbers were at first disappointing (until the large initial order sold through) but then took off, or figures for reorders were simply slow in being reported and processed. Either way, once more numbers were in Bob essentially reversed his initial statement, at least as far as Sgt.Rock was concerned. Enemy Ace shipped in October, six months later than Rock, so we could yet hear the same about it. It's Blackhawk that worries me--I really want at least a few more volumes. IP: Logged |

I too would like to see another volume of Blackhawk put into the system. I was fortunate enough to pick one up at 50% off the cover and enjoyed it greatly. IP: Logged |

I would like to see Blackhawk archives continue, at least for the remainder of the 1940s run. In my opinion, Reed Crandall's art in Blackhawk #1 is the artistic highlight of all the Golden Age archives published so far. IP: Logged |
